Manoj Das (Born in 1934) is an Indian award-winning bilingual (দ্বিভাষিক, যিনি দুই ভাষায় কথা বলেন ও লেখেন)writer who writes in Oriya and English. He has written many novels, short stories, poems, travelogues (ভ্রমন কাহিনি) and articles (প্রবন্ধ) on history and culture (সংস্কৃতি)।
মনোজ দাস (জন্ম-১৯৩৪) একজন ভারতীয় পুরষ্কারবিজয়ী দ্বিভাষিক লেখক যিনি ওড়িয়া এবং ইংরেজিতে লেখেন। তিনি ইতিহাস ও সংস্কৃতি বিষয়ে অনেক উপন্যাস, ছোট গল্প, কবিতা, ভ্রমণকাহিনী এবং প্রবন্ধ লিখেছেন।
This text is an edited (সম্পাদিত)version (সংস্করণ) of Das’s short story which narrates (বর্ণনা করে)Bhola Grandpa’s hilarious (হাস্যকর) adventures (দুঃসাহসিক ঘটনা) seen through the eyes of a young man who had known him closely. The simplicity (সরলতা) and forgetfulness (বিস্মৃতি, ভুলে যাওয়ার অভ্যাস)of Bhola Grandpa provides (প্রদান করে)an element of humour (হাস্যরস)on which the story hinges(নির্ভর করে আছে).

Bhola Grandpa and his wife lived at the western end of our village. A large bokal tree (বকুল গাছ) overshadowed (উপরে ছায়া ফেলেছিল) their hut (কুটির ঘর). In the bokal tree lived a small troop of monkeys(একদল বানর). Bhola Grandpa and his wife did not mind (আপত্তি করা) it.
ভোলা দাদু ও তাঁর স্ত্রী আমাদের গ্রামের পশ্চিম প্রান্তে থাকতেন। একটি বড় বকুল গাছ তাদের কুঁড়েঘরের উপরে ছায়া ফেলেছিল। বকুল গাছটিতে বানরদের একটি ছোট্ট দল থাকত। ভোলা দাদা ও তার স্ত্রী এতে আপত্তি করেনি।
One moonlit (জোৎস্না)night, we were returning (ফিরছিল)from a festival(উৎসব). The road was long and foggy(কুয়াশাছন্ন). I was riding (চড়া)on the village chowkidar’s shoulders(কাঁধ). Suddenly(হঠাৎ করে), Bhola Grandpa let out a loud wail(উচ্চস্বরে কান্না). Everyone in our party was surprised(অবাক হয়ে গেছিল) We halted(থেমেছিল). Enquiry (খোঁজ)revealed (জানা গেল)that Bhola Grandpa had taken his grandson (নাতি)to the festival. He had tightly (শক্ত করে) held (ধরেছিল)on to the two fingers of the boy. He did not realize( বুঝতে পারা) when those fingers slipped(পিছলে গিয়েছিল) out. Bhola Grandpa was continuing (চলা) as before. Then someone asked Bhola Grandpa what he was gripping(আঁকড়ে ধরা). He remembered (মনে পড়েছিল)his grandson and let out a loud wail.
এক জোৎস্না রাতে আমরা উৎসব থেকে ফিরছিলাম। রাস্তাটি দীর্ঘ এবং কুয়াশাচ্ছন্ন ছিল। আমি গ্রামের চৌকিদারের কাঁধে চড়ে ছিলাম। হঠাৎ ভোলা দাদু একটা জোরে চিৎকার করে উঠলেন। আমাদের দলের সবাই অবাক হল। আমরা থামলাম। খোঁজ নিয়ে জানা যায়, ভোলা দাদা তার নাতিকে উৎসবে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন। তিনি ছেলেটির দুই আঙুল শক্ত করে চেপে ধরেছিলেন। কখন যে আঙুলগুলো পিছলে গেছে বুঝতেই পারেননি। ভোলা দাদু আগের মতই চলছিলেন। তারপরে কেউ একজন ভোলা দাদুকে জিজ্ঞেস করলো তিনি কি আঁকড়ে ধরে আছেন। তখন তিনি তার নাতির কথা মনে করলেন এবং উচ্চস্বরে হাহাকার করলেন।
My father chose two sharp-eyed (তীক্ষ্ণ দৃষ্টি সম্পন্ন) men from our party to go back with Bhola Grandpa to the festival. The grandson was found before long. He had taken a cosy(আরামদায়ক) shelter (আশ্রয়) under a cow’s belly(পেট).
আমার বাবা ভোলা দাদুকে নিয়ে উত্সবে ফিরে যাওয়ার জন্য দল থেকে দু’জন তীক্ষ্ণ চোখের লোককে বেছে নিয়েছিলেন। নাতিটিকে অনেক আগেই পাওয়া গিয়েছিল। সে একটি গরুর পেটের নিচে আরামদায়ক আশ্রয় নিয়েছিল।
