About the poet:

William Blake(1757-1827) was one of the greatest poets of the Romantic age. Blake’s poetry was published in a manner most unusual in literary and art history. He set up a print shop and engraved and published his own poems. Some of his well-known works are Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience and The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.

The sun does arise,

And make happy the skies.

The merry bells ring

To welcome the spring.

The skylark and thrush,

The birds of the bush,

Sing louder around,

To the bells’ cheerful sound,

While our sports shall be seen

On the echoing green.

Old John with white hair

Does laugh away care,

Sitting under the oak,

Among the old folk.

They laugh at our play,

And soon they all say:

‘Such, such were the joys ‘

When we all, girls and boys,

In our youth-time were seen

On the echoing green!

Till the little ones weary

No more can be merry;

তারা আর আনন্দ করবে না;

The sun does descend,

And our sports have an end.

Round the laps of their mother

Many sisters and brothers,

Like birds in their nest,

Are ready for rest;

বিশ্রামের জন্য প্রস্তুত ;

And sport no more seen

On the darkening green.

The Echoing Green (Lesson 10) Explanation | Class 7

The sun does arise,
And make happy the skies.
The merry bells ring
To welcome the Spring.
The sky-lark and thrush,
The birds of the bush,
Sing louder around,
To the bells’ cheerful sound.
While our sports shall be seen
On the Ecchoing Green.

Old John, with white hair
Does laugh away care,
Sitting under the oak,
Among the old folk,
They laugh at our play,
And soon they all say.
‘Such, such were the joys.
When we all girls & boys,
In our youth-time were seen,
On the Ecchoing Green.’

Till the little ones weary
No more can be merry
The sun does descend,
And our sports have an end:
Round the laps of their mothers,
Many sisters and brothers,
Like birds in their nest,
Are ready for rest;
And sport no more seen,
On the darkening Green.
